(30 May 1862 - 6 August 1905) was a Slovene painter and teacher. He was born in a peasant family in the small Carniolan village of Dolenčice near Škofja Loka in Austria-Hungary (today, in Slovenia). At first he studied art in Ljubljana under the supervision of Janez Wolf who introduced him to the style of the Nazarene movement. At the age of twenty he went to Vienna, where he attended the Akademie der bildenden K??nste. In 1884 he moved to Munich. Initially he attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, but in 1885 he left it in order to join the private painting school of Ludwig von Löfftz. In 1892, he established his own school which soon became known under the name of Azbe-Schule and became one of the most renowned painting schools for young artists in the Bavarian capital. Vasily Vereshchagin
(Russian: October 26, 1842 - April 13, 1904) was one of the most famous Russian battle painters and one of the first Russian artists to be widely recognized abroad. The graphic nature of his realist scenes led many of them to never be printed or exhibited. Vereshchagin was born at Cherepovets, Novgorod Governorate, Russia in 1842 as the middle of three brothers. His father was a landowner of noble birth. When he was eight years old he was sent to Tsarskoe Selo to enter the Alexander Cadet Corps, and three years later he entered the Sea Cadet Corps at St Petersburg, making his first voyage in 1858. He served on the frigate Kamchatka, which sailed to Denmark, France and Egypt. Vereshchagin graduated first in the list at the naval school, but left the service immediately to begin the study of drawing in earnest. He won a medal two years later, in 1863, from the St Petersburg Academy for his Ulysses Slaying the Suitors.
Metcalf, Willard Leroy
American Impressionist Painter, 1858-1925 American painter and illustrator. His formal education was limited, and at 17 he was apprenticed to the painter George Loring Brown of Boston. He was one of the first scholarship students admitted to the school of art sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and took classes there in 1877 and 1878. After spending several years illustrating magazine articles on the Zuni Indians of New Mexico, he decided to study abroad and in 1883 left for Paris. There he studied at the Acad?mie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. During the five years he spent in France he became intimately acquainted with the countryside around the villages of Grez-sur-Loing and Giverny. He returned to America in 1888
